The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is comprised of eleven distinct divisions focused on the full range of Medical Specialties. Each division, concentrating on their discipline, upholds the tripartite mission of the Department of Medicine:
- Outstanding patient care and community outreach
- Medical Education, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and
- Research and Scholarship
This Department of Medicine website outlines the resources and characteristics of the various programs in individual divisions, each of which offer exceptional programs for Residents and Fellows, who enjoy an outstanding diversity of patients, superb facilities, excellent faculty, a balanced curriculum, and a supportive nurturing environment in which they are challenged as well as supported on their way to reaching their full potential.
Research is a primary focus of all the Divisions within our Department. Under the leadership of Chair Louis B. Rice and Vice Chair for Research Bharat Ramratnam, clinical as well as basic research programs have thrived. Total research funding within the Department of Medicine at Brown affiliated hospitals represented 46% of all external research funding at Brown University Health, making it one of the most highly funded Departments of Medicine in the country. Over 70% of funding comes from federal programs such as NIH, HRSA, CDC, and DHHS.
The Department strives to collaborate with our community, supporting the RI Free Clinic, advocating at the Rhode Island Statehouse, recruiting new employees or searching locally for participants in our many clinical trials, we are continually reaching out to the vibrant and diverse Rhode Island community around us. Overall, the Department of Medicine employs over five hundred faculty members and many more support and administrative staff.
