Overview
The Division of Rheumatology is involved in clinical, educational, and research activities. The mission of the Division is to pursue and maintain clinical excellence in the medical care of patients with arthritis, musculoskeletal, autoimmune, and inflammatory diseases. The Division provides outpatient services to patients with a variety of autoimmune and musculoskeletal illnesses ranging from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis to systemic lupus erythematosus and scleroderma. In addition, the Division provides consultation services for inpatients with rheumatologic problems at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and weekend inpatient coverage at Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC).
The Division of Rheumatology sponsors a Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program that is ACGME accredited and based at Rhode Island Hospital.
The Division of Rheumatology also carries out clinical and basic research activities performed by faculty members and Fellows in the Division.

Rheumatology Fellowship Program
The Brown Rheumatology fellowship program is designed for individuals interested in careers as clinical or academic-clinical rheumatologists.
Research Programs
The Rheumatology faculty and fellows are involved in various ongoing clinical research projects. It is required for fellows to participate in at least one supervised project during their training, which may be a clinical or laboratory based project. It is expected that the results will be presented at a local or national meeting and prepared for publication.
Anthony Reginato, PhD, MD: The major basic science research component of the Division of Rheumatology is directed by Dr. Anthony M. Reginato who interacts with the Department of Orthopedics through the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for Skeletal Health and Repair at Rhode Island Hospital and the Department of Hematology Oncology (Dr Olin Liang) to provide a multidisciplinary research center with emphasis of basic science of joint diseases. COBRE’s areas of research interest include bone and joint development, bone biology, cytokine biology and signaling, boundary lubrication and biomechanics, pathogenesis of degenerative and crystal-induced arthritis. Dr. Reginato’s clinical research interests include the application of musculoskeletal ultrasound to diagnosis of rheumatic diseases, outcomes measures in crystal induced-arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.
Joanne S. Cunha, MD: Dr. Cunha’s clinical research interests are in psoriatic arthritis, rheumatologic disorders in pregnancy and musculoskeletal ultrasound. She is currently co-principal investigator working with OB-medicine at Women and Infant’s Hospital to characterize patient outcomes from our Specialty Care in Pregnancy (SCIP) clinic. This clinic uses a multidisciplinary approach, with the patient care team including obstetrical medicine internists and rheumatologists to provide preconception counseling and recommendations for the care of patients with rheumatologic diseases during their pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum periods.
Deepan Dalal, MD, MPH: Dr. Dalal continues to maintain interest on epidemiological outcomes research involving osteoarthritis, pharmacoeconomics of rheumatic diseases, and rheumatic diseases in the elderly.
Katarzyna Gilek-Seibert, MD: Dr. Gilek has interests in medical education, innovation, and optimum patient care delivery. She is interested in digital technology and presented at Brown MedEd Talks this year on ChatGPT in medicine. As part of the team of residents and fellows’ scholarly effort there were educational posters presented at EULAR meetings in 2022 and 2023. The projects were in relation to knee arthrocentesis teaching to medical residents using the SIM model. Another clinical-based project, on management of immunosuppressives while sick in rheumatology patients, completed with residents and fellows, was just accepted for ACR presentation in November. This project has two parts, and the second phase is in the early inception period.
